My artwork is represented by Lando Gallery in Edmonton, Alberta and these paintings are part of a body of work focused on abstract patterns in nature. The works are acrylic and mixed media on carved plywood and they range in size from 24 x 24 inches to 36 x 36 inches. I like to utilize the grain of the wood in parts of the image through giving them a ‘stained’ appearance. I also use the acrylic medium to inlay transparent or opaque colour into the carved areas.
As the square format and close cropping indicates, my process starts off photographically. The imagery is directly connected to the original photograph and is then further abstracted through the use of colour and the changes that take place as it is translated into another medium. Patterson Ewen had a profound influence on me when I saw his exhibition in Halifax in the 1980s (1988?) and inspired me to focus on taking a more sculptural approach to image making/painting.
